A Synopsis Of The Spy FIlm Movie North By Northwest

Alfred Hitchcock is typically remembered as the master of suspense, but in truth, he pioneered just about everything that would eventually become modern cinema. In Psycho, he invented the slasher film. With North by Northwest, he created the notion of the all-action film. While the film has the same sort of twisty-turny plot that we associate with the master, it is defined by its incredible action set pieces.

Everybody knows about the airplane chase with the crop duster chasing Cary Grant through the crops. It’s a great scene, sure, but only one of several awesome set pieces in the film. The shootout on the face of Mt. Rushmore is an equally jaw dropping piece of film making, but one of the real crowning moments is the drunken chase. Cary Grant is fed glass after glass of booze and then put in a car with no brakes, so he has to flee the badguys while drunk in a car with a cut brake line!

In this day and age, you rarely see this much imagination in action films. There are always exceptions like in the film Shootemup, or some of the Hong Kong classics of recent decades, but regardless, this film has more imagination and intelligence than a dozen other action films put together. Seeing Cary Grant cruising down the street, drunk as a skunk and dodging bullets… It’s hard to get so excited over one more car running over yet another fruit stand.

One thing this film has that most action flicks lack would be context. The climactic shootout isn’t just a shootout, it’s a shootout on the face of Mt. Rushmore. The chase scene with the biplane has Grant running into the crops only to have the plane dust him with pesticide. Layers of challenge were thrust at the hero and it only kept piling up.

It was never enough for Hitchcock to just put the hero up against some badguys with guns, he had to put his heroes between a rock and a hard place, into situations where anything they could do to solve one problem would only lead to other problems. This made for better stories and better action.

It’s really too bad that the legacy Hitchcock left behind would be so frequently copied, turned into formula, rather than innovated upon and re-imagined. Still, we’ll always have classics like Psycho and Vertigo to go back to when we get bored of the same old kiss kiss, bang bang that we get from so many dull genre efforts these days.

This film, in addition to some of the greatest action scenes in the history of cinema, also has one of the most explicit love scenes: A train going into a tunnel as the hero embraces the leading lady. It’s as direct a metaphor as you could ask for. In fact, Hitchcock couldn’t understand the appeal of the X rated films of the seventies since the idea of explicit sex scenes was old news to him!

If you haven’t yet, see it. It remains startlingly relevant and exciting all these years later, and makes a perfect antidote to the big budget blockbusters that have the scale and scope of North by Northwest, but not the style.

Simply turn the screws to lower the string height. Fast Movie Downloads The latter is done literally with all that there is on hand and in the shortest amount of time possible. Paul: You see Ive always been, I suppose, a bit shy about getting up on stage.

Can Anyone Develop Psychic Powers?

When the subject of psychic abilities comes up in a room full of people, the reactions will range from completely freaked out to skeptical to pure excitement. If you are the one getting excited and wondering about your own potential to develop psychic abilities, it may be time to take action on that dream.

Psychics have a very distinct ability to see into the subconscious mind. Some psychics even have the ability to see into the past. This is referred to as retro cognition. Some people who are psychic claim to have the ability to see into the future as well. A good example of someone who could see into the future is Nostradamus.

There are also many psychics who can speak to the dead. These people who develop psychic powers are sometimes referred to as a medium. For example, Jon Edwards talks to the dead on his daytime talk show. These are only some names for a few psychic powers. Psychics are also sometimes referred to as clairvoyants or Second Sights.

There is not a lot of information on the history of psychics. History does tell us that psychics have been a part of the world for a very long time. In ancient Egypt, royalty used psychics as consultants. They will help the kings decide what to do in troubling times. This was a great job for them as long as they were always right! Giving the king the wrong advice often resulted in a prison sentence or worse, death.

There aren’t stiff punishments for psychics who make a mistake in our modern times, which is why so many people are working to develop their own natural powers. Even people who do not have a natural tendency to see or know things intuitively are taking action to increase the awareness on a deeper, spiritual level.

It is not an easy task to develop psychic powers, but virtually anyone can do it with a lot of patience and dedication. It takes many years to truly tap into the subconscious mind and be able to see and sense things beyond your five senses. This is why people who decide to do this must take it very seriously. Their first step is to make meditation a regular part of their daily life.

One of the first things you need to do is start thinking in a positive manner. People who have constant negative thoughts have a hard time tapping into their subconscious. You need to release all of the negativity for your life. Releasing negativity can mean releasing negative thoughts, but it can also mean releasing negative people from your life as well. Surround yourself with people who have a positive influence on your life.

Anyone trying to develop psychic abilities has to practice meditation consistently. Not only does this help train the mind on positive energies, but it teaches you about yourself and allows you to identify your own strengths and weaknesses. Beyond enabling you to develop psychic powers over time, meditation will deliver good health in mind and body.

If you have trouble really releasing your mind or focusing while in a meditative pose, don’t get frustrated. It takes time to really learn this and some people will practice daily for years before they really start to get it down pat. Fit into your life at any time of the day that is best for your concentration and schedule, but make sure to do it at least a half hour every single day.

When it comes to selecting the perfect meditation location, remember that you want to train your mind on all things positive. Do not try to do this when you are surrounded by tension or negative situations. Find somewhere truly relaxing and peaceful; somewhere you associate with good thoughts. This may be outside surrounded by nature for some people, while others prefer the peace and quiet of their own home.

During you meditation you will want to try to push all the thoughts out of your mind. This can be difficult to do and that is why it is so hard to achieve perfect mediation. Focus on the things around you. Listen to the sound that you hear and the things that you smell. Try to invoke your senses and pull yourself inward.

Once you have achieved your perfect meditative state you may notice that you become more aware and empathetic to those around you. When you begin to notice this, you will how that you are beginning to develop your psychic powers.

How To Treat Your Eczema In The Pubic Region

The most negative thing about eczema is that is doesn’t pick what area it wants to show up. It can be on your face, your brows or chest and the most embarrassing situation would be if it develops on your pubic region. Imagine yourself feeling the unstoppable itchy situation in public but you cannot scratch right there and then because people will see. They may think the worst type of thing like you have an STD. No matter what you do, you just can’t go relieve the itchiness through scratching in public.

The entire situation of eczema showing up in public regions makes the most easiest task extremely challenging to handle. You grow wearier each day because it gets worst everyday. Fortunately, there are tons of ways to relieve yourself from the stress of avoiding to scratch without being embarrassed and without compromising your self-esteem in front of other people.

As we all know, there are more than a few topical creams and medicines that you can definitely buy out there within the market and the good thing is that all of them really work well but in similar ways. You can opt for topical steroids with antihistamine so that you can stop from scratching or go for natural products. But, believe me that topical antihistamine creams work fast and best. You only have to apply it twice in a day. Apply it once in the morning after you take a bath (just make sure that the area is clean and already dry before you apply it) and once in the evening before you retire to bed (also, make sure that the area is clean and dry).

If you wisht to go all natural, this may be a little challenging to do especially once you’re taking care of the pubic region. You will worry that in between the day you will experience the itchy feeling again. At least with the topical antihistamine, it works for at least 8-12 hours depending on the current situation that you are in. Therefore, I recommend you take the route of prescription or over the counter topical antihistamine creams so that you may stay away from the itchiness within public.

Aside from the treatment creams, you also have to maintain a certain balance in everything including your diet, hygiene and exercise. You should remain to be physically fit because this will boost your immune system especially now that you have this skin condition. Avoid foods (like spicy ones) that can trigger eczema in the first place and maintain proper hygiene at all times. This means that you have to shower everyday and make the pubic region extra clean. Be positive that the area is as dry as possible and free from any type of moist since moisture may generate the itchiness too.

You no longer must experience this skin disease, it’s time to get control of your eczema condition! You can lessen or even get rid of your eczema symptoms permanently utilizing this exceptional Treatment For Eczema. Edmonton Gains Sole Possession Of First Place In CFL West With Win Over Stamps

The Edmonton Eskimos survived a wild back and forth CFL shootout against the Calgary Stampeders before prevailing 38-35 to take over sole possession of first place in the CFL West. Ricky Ray hit Fred Stamps with a 23 yard touchdown pass with just nine seconds to play to earn the victory, erasing the lead that Calgary had earned with their own TD pass less than a half minute earlier.

After the game, winning QB Ricky Ray said that he enjoyed the wild contest:

“That was a ton of fun. In the CFL you get to play in a lot of games like this, especially against a guy like (Calgary quarterback Henry) Burris, who has done this to us. It’s great to come out on the winning end of a shoot-out like that. It’s a great uplift for the team. It’s a huge win for us.”

Eskimos head coach Richie Hall said that the outcome couldnt have been timed any better:

“Regardless of what happens, we are coming back in first place. Now we have one up on Calgary. It’s going to be a dogfight for all the teams in the West and any chance you get to win, especially a win like this, it’s a real bonus. It’s great for our confidence.”

Calgarys Burris remembered a very similar game last year where Edmonton won by the same margin on a last play touchdown:

“They got us last year in this situation and of course you didn’t think it was going to happen again or even could happen again. It felt so great to get that late touchdown and with 38 seconds on the clock nobody was even thinking about last year. We had to stop Jackson and we didn’t. And we had to stop Ray and we didn’t. Kudos to Edmonton.”

Both teams have a bye next week. Calgary returns to action on Aug. 28 in Toronto while the Eskimos will next play on Aug. 29 when they host Hamilton.

UFC 94 Flashback: GSP Destroys BJ Penn

BJ Penn entered his main event battle against welterweight kingpin Georges St. Pierre looking to become the first man in UFC history to simultaneously hold titles in two weight classes. GSP never gave him the chance to make history, as he stopped Penn after four increasingly dominant rounds to retain his belt with a TKO victory and make a compelling case for being the pound for pound best fighter in mixed martial arts.

During ring introductions, both men received enthusiastic cheers tempered with a few boos. After the opening horn sounded, however, the Penn backers had little to cheer about . The first round was fairly evenly contested, with St. Pierre trying to get a first hand feel for Penn’s often unorthodox takedown defense. GSP made several takedown attempts, but had them repeatedly stuffed.

Boxing guru Freddy Roach recently praised Penn as the best technical puncher in MMA, but he had no opportunity to bring this weapon to bear as he had trouble finding the range from the outset. St. Pierre was unable to complete any takedowns during the first round, but easily dictated the pace and style of the bout.

GSP began to assert his dominance in round two. He got a takedown early in the frame and began to mount a ground and pound assault while moving around in Penns legendary guard with frightening ease. At this point, it was apparent that GSPs superior strength and insane physical conditioning were going to figure prominently in the outcome of the fight.

The eventual outcome was foretold between rounds two and three, as the obviously exhausted Penn required a pep talk from his entourage that his fatigue was all in his head. Across the cage, GSP calmly sipped water and listened intently to trainer Greg Jacksons instructions looking for all the world that he could go 12 rounds if necessary.

Round three was similar to the previous one, with GSP taking his opponent to the mat with a decreasing level of resistance and mauling him with punches and elbows once he got there. His complete control over the BJJ black belt Penn was incredible, but hardly surprising given the way that GSP dominated four time NCAA All American wrestler Josh Koscheck on the ground during their matchup.

The fourth round was a wall to wall rout for the welterweight champion, who started by effectively trading strikes with Penn before taking him down once again and resuming his highly successful ground based attack. At this point with GSP moving around at ease and Penn mounting little resistance it was apparent that the challenger was physically spent. St. Pierre almost ended the fight on the ground, as referee Herb Dean repeatedly reminding Penn that he needs to fight back. Penn survived the round on instinct alone, moving around just enough to keep the referee from stopping the proceedings. After the horn sounded to end the fourth round, however, it was evident that Penn had nothing physically or emotionally left and the fight was stopped by Dean on advice from the ringside physician.

Displaying his characteristic class, GSP delayed his celebration until he had crossed the cage and kneeled by his vanquished foe to honor his competitive spirit.

In the co-feature attraction, Lyoto Machida kept his undefeated professional MMA record intact with a first round TKO victory over Thiago Silva. Silva had no answer for Machidas well rounded skills and unorthodox Shotokan karate based style. Machida took his opponent down and knocked his opponent down twice”all counters as Silva was coming forward and Machida backing away. As the first round entered its final seconds, it appeared that Silva started to ease up in anticipation of the horn. Machida used this opportunity for another takedown, and then nailed his surprised opponent with a powerful punch that ended the fight.

UFC 85 Flashback: Alves, Bisping Win

Thiago Alves dominated the former UFC welterweight champion en route to a 2nd round TKO victory at UFC 83. The main event at UFC 85 in London was somewhat anticlimactic to the fans at the O2 Arena who considered the semifinal matchup between Manchester’s Michael Bisping and Jason Day the biggest fight on the card. Bisping actually improved upon his excellent showing against Charles McCarthy at UFC 83 and pummeled Day mercilessly from the top mount position until the fight was stopped.

Hughes didn’t make any excuses following his one sided loss, saying simply that hes a good fighter and he got me. The longtime king of the UFCs welterweight division also gave notice that his career as an active fighter was drawing to a close, suggesting that he had one fight left and challenging Matt Serra in what presumably would be his retirement match. Hughes had no answer for Alves from the opening horn, as he was stuffed on several takedown attempts early on. When he did finally get his opponent to the ground he was unable to do much damage. Alves, conversely, scored effectively with his striking including several damaging knee strikes. He also did considerable work on the ground, with an elbow strike opening up a large cut on Hughes forehead. Though he didnt get to his knees a la Georges St. Pierre, Alves did make a plea to Dana White for a title shot. His failure to make weight wont help his cause, however, and judging from the UFC Presidents incredulous smirk in response that opportunity wont be immediately forthcoming.

The end came early in the 2nd round as Hughes was caught coming in by a devastating knee strike. He fell to the canvas in a heap and referee Herb Dean was jumping in to stop the contest before Alves could follow up with any punches.

Michael Bisping simply overwhelmed Jason Day en route to a lopsided TKO victory. Bisping built upon the improved boxing skills he demonstrated at UFC 83 by unveiling an impressive ground and pound attack. Day never really got anything going and by the last minute of the fight was simply trying to cover up to prevent damage from Bispings elbows and hammer fists. Between his move down to the middleweight division and his improved technical striking skills, Bisping looks like a different fighter.

In other action, Mike Swick used an array of high kicks and a 7 reach advantage to coast to a unanimous decision over Marcus Davis. Davis, a former professional boxer, was unable to get inside against his lanky opponent and was never really in the fight. Like Bisping, Swick may have made an excellent career choice by moving down in weight. His height and reach, combined with a well rounded striking game, makes him a particularly different matchup at the lower weight.

A controversial point deduction for a strike to the back of the head cost Nate Marquardt his match against Thales Leites. Marquardt was solidly in charge for the entire fight, but suffered a point deduction for an illegal knee strike in round one. While that infraction was valid, replays of the 2nd round deduction for the strike to the back of the head gave the impression that he was penalized for a legal strike to the side of the head.

In the opening PPV match, another controversial ending saw Fabrico Werdum defeat Brandon Vera by 1st round KO. The fight had been evenly contested up until the stoppage, with Werdum scoring a couple of takedown and Vera countering with some effective punching. Late in the first round, Werdum got a full mount and began to fire a series of punches. Vera was clearly defending himself and didnt appear to be hurt at all when the referee jumped in to stop the fight.

Our Favorite Of The Top Paid Android Applications

Most of the fun that comes with owning a smart phone comes from playing with all of the applications. The type of smart phone you buy isn’t really all that important–there are applications for pretty much all of them. If you have a phone that runs the Android operating system there are plenty of apps for you to choose from. There are free applications and paid applications. Most people choose to stick with free apps. That does not mean, however, that there are not paid apps worth buying. In fact, there are a lot of paid applications out there that are worth their asking prices. We think that these are some of the best top paid Android applications.

Fit Sync is a paid application that is perfect for people who want to get in shape. This paid app comes complete with hundreds of pre-planned workouts, thousands of workout videos and even about fifty fitness plans. The application has software that will allow you to record your workouts and track your progress from day to day and week to week. Fit Sync has widgets that you can use to track your progress on your website or through various social networks; it hooks directly into Facebook.

Discover Pro is only about seven dollars but is incredibly handy. This application helps you send files from your phone to your computer and vice versa–you can even send them to other phones that are connected to the same wireless network (even if they are not Android phones). This application is great for cutting down on the amount of time you spend e-mailing and makes it a lot easier to work from home–you won’t be chained to your computer anymore when you want to share your files! The nice thing is that this app is not limited to only document files. You can share photos and other types of files as well!

There are some who insist that game applications shouldn’t cost anything. The Air Hockey app for Android phones is only ninety nine cents (at the time of this article’s writing) and, really, is just for fun. Many people find that they quickly lose interest in most game apps. Think about it though: who doesn’t like to play Air Hockey? The Air Hockey app is, quite possibly, the most popular paid game app in the Android Market. It might even be the most popular app in both the paid and free categories! It’s less than a dollar. Why not give it a chance?

It’s hard to figure out which of the paid applications are best. Most smart phone users are wary about shopping in the paid app market and won’t do it unless they can’t find what they want in the free app section. For the most part, the paid apps are sold for very fair prices. Remember, apps are meant to make your life easier and more entertaining. Isn’t that worth a dollar or two?

The Mapes Hotel: Lost Landmark Of Northern Nevada History

The Mapes Hotel in Reno, Nevada met its demise on Superbowl Sunday of 2000 when 75 pounds of explosives packed inside the structure’s support columns brought it to the ground. The controlled demolition came despite years of effort by a number of groups within the community to preserve the building with lawsuits, redevelopment proposals, and grass roots lobbying efforts. The National Trust for Historic Preservation even took up the cause, challenging the destruction in a lawsuit that eventually reached the Nevada Supreme Court.

While the efficacy and justification of demolishing the Mapes is debatable, one thing that is not is the glorious history of the hotel. It was built in’47, and signaled the start of the modern era of casino gambling. Despite the notoriety of Bugsy Siegel and the Flamingo in Las Vegas, it was the Mapes that became the first building in the nation to have a hotel, casino and live entertainment under one roof. It also became the hotel of choice for celebrities staying in Northern Nevada. Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe stayed at The Mapes during the filming of ‘The Misfits’. Joseph McCarthy, America’s famed anti-Communist crusader, admitted to a reporter over cocktails in the Mapes Lounge that he really didn’t have a list of Communists in the US despite his frequent and vitriolic insistence to the contrary.

In the 50s and 60s it became, along with Lake Tahoes Cal-Neva Lodge the place to be seen in Northern Nevada. The top floor, window-walled Sky Room showcased performances by the legends: Sinatra, Louis Prima, Mae West, Milton Berle, Sammy Davis, Jr., and the Marx Brothers among others. Subsequent years were not kind to downtown Reno but the Mapes prospered during the 60′s and 70′s. The hotel finally closed in’82, due more to financial difficulties experienced by the Mapes family caused by one of their other Northern Nevada gaming properties than anything else.

Reno never experienced the massive growth that occurred in Las Vegas and southern Nevada, and for that reason the destruction of the Mapes is more open to debate than the hotel demolitions to the south. Even the demolition of The Sands–perhaps the most historically significant casino in the state–is hard to argue against given the inability of such a small property to compete in the current Las Vegas marketplace and in light of the value of the mid-strip real estate. The old properties may have historic value to pop culture historians, but their survival doesn’t make economic sense. They’re simply ‘analog players in a digital world’.

This is not the case in Reno, where land and buildings for development in virtually every casino area are abundant. The official reason that the Mapes had to come down was that the city needed the land–which sits along the banks of the Truckee River–to expand its riverside district of art galleries, restaurants and shops. The revitalization of downtown Reno is definitely needed and a legitimate goal, but at the same time it is hard to think that the Mapes was a barrier to this. Indeed, a number of proposals for redevelopment including office space, artists lofts and upscale senior housing would have probably served to enhance the livability of the downtown area. For whatever reason, the City Redevelopment Authority wouldn’t approve any of the proposals and the fate of the Mapes was sealed.

The behavior of the City Redevelopment Authority throughout the process has come into question. Overlooking the Truckee River, the hotel was perfectly placed between the downtown casino area and the riverfront district. In’96, the city purchased the htoel and began accepting proposals for redevelopment. Despite receiving a number of proposals that made sense both in terms of their financial workability and positive impact on the downtown area, the City Redevelopment Authority nixed all of them and insisted that the hotel be razed.

After the demolition of The Mapes Hotel, the lot remained vacant for almost a year until a temporary ice skating rink was constructed in the winter of 2001. The site now houses a permanent ice skating rink which, while not a bad use for the land, brings into question the insistence by the City Redevelopment Agency that none of the proposals to preserve the building were viable. Clearly, they had no specific plan or even general idea of what to do with the land but for some reason wanted to see the hotel come down. This has led to all manner of speculation, ranging from financial self interest to a rumor that the structure was ‘haunted’ and needed to be destroyed to forestall future paranormal activity in Washoe County. Whatever the reason, the city of Reno lost a valuable landmark of a more civilized era.
